Summary:

Simon and Inara talk while look at the rest of crew who are goofing off, playing some ball game. But a siren goes off and Wash goes to see what’s going on. He finds that there is a ship, seemingly deserted, floating near them and then a dead body hits Serenity. The crew talks it over and Mal decides they will board the ship to look for survivors and salvage cargo for themselves.

When Mal boards the ship and looks things over with Zoë they see evidence that what killed this crew was a quick because there is food sitting around and a half finished log entry. Jayne tricks Simon into coming on the ship where he join Kaylee in collecting spare parts, Zoë and Mal keeping searching the ship and Jayne is off poking around the ship on his own while Inara is watching River back on Serenity.

Mal and Zoë discover the bodies of the settlers hanging from the ceiling and Mal tells everyone to get off the ship when Jayne is attacked from behind. The crew comes upon Jayne as he comes to. They find the little man that attacked him, hiding and Mal knocks him out and brings him back to Serenity with them for Simon to treat and Mal has him sedated. Jayne suggests this man is the one who killed the settlers but Mal explains that Reavers are the ones who did the killing and this man witnessed it and is beyond saving.

Shepherd Book goes with Simon to tend to the dead settlers while Kaylee has to undo rigging that the Reavers set up so that when Serenity would try to leave the ship they would blow up. The goods are collected and Serenity successfully detaches from the ship. But when they begin to continue on their way they run into Alliance men. The Alliance had been looking for a firefly class ships and more specifically for the Simon and River. So Alliance men search the ship as the crew of Serenity is being questioned and Simon and River stay hidden by wearing space suits and  holding on to the outside of Serenity, which River almost enjoys and Simon is frightened.

The interrogation of the crew gets the Alliance no closer to finding the Tam siblings but Mal is accused of the killings and tormenting of  the surviving man that the Alliance is now treating. But the guy starts killing Alliance men and Mal leads a crew of Alliance men back to Serenity to try to stop the man. Mal ends up killing the tortured settler, saving the Alliance men. The Alliance then leaves the crew of the Serenity to continue on their way, minus the goods they got off of the settler’s ship.

Memorable Quotes:

"Oh my god. What can it be?
We're all doomed! Who's flying this thing!?"
(deadpan) "Oh right, that would be me. Back to work." – Wash

Harken: "You fought with Captain Reynolds in the war?"

Zoe:"Fought with a lot of people in the war."

Harken: "And your husband?"

Zoe: "Fight with him sometimes, too."

Harken: "Seems odd you'd name your ship
after a battle you were on the wrong side of."

Mal: "May have been the losing side.
Still not convinced it was the wrong one."

Jayne: "You saved his gorram life,
he still takes the cargo. Hwoon dahn."

Mal: "He had to.... Couldn't let us profit.
Wouldn't be civilized."

Wash: "Did he just go crazy and fall asleep?"

Jayne: "I think that fellow we ran into did everyone on board,
killed them all, then decided to take a swim through space,
see how fast his blood would boil out of his ears."
Wash: "You're a very "up" person."

Simon:"Oh yes, he's a real beast. It's a wonder you're still alive."
Jayne:  "Looked bigger when I couldn't see him."

Zoe: "Jayne, you'll scare the women."

Mal: "It's a real burden being right so often."

Mal: "If I didn't know better, I'd think we were dangerous."

Simon: "Yeah. I selflessly turned us both into wanted fugitives."
Inara: "Well, we're all running from something I suppose."

Book: "Shall I remind you of the story of the Good Samaritan?"
Mal: "I'd rather you didn't. But we'll check it out.
See if there are survivors. If not, then, well no one's going
to mind if we take a look around, see if there's not
something of value they might have left behind."
Jayne:" Yeah, no, uh, someone could be hurt."

Jayne: " It's impressive what "nothing" can do to a man.
Like that fella we bumped into.
He's likely stuck up under our belly about now.
That's what space trash does, you know.
Kind of latches onto the first big something that stops long enough.
Hey now, that'd be a bit like you and your sister
now, wouldn't it?"

Simon: "You're hilarious. Sadist."

Mal: "Shh, easy now. No one's going to hurt you--
I mean, more than we already did."

Jayne:  "Yeah, real hero, killing all them people."
Kaylee: "What!? We don't believe that. We don't, do we?"

Mal: "Doesn't matter that we took him off that boat, Shepherd,
it's the place he's going to live from now on."

Mal:"You tell me right now, little Kaylee, you really think you can do this?"
Kaylee: "Sure. Yeah. I think so. 'Sides, if I mess up,
not like you'll be able to yell at me."

Jayne: "What's going on?"
Mal:"Well, I'd have to say, right at this particular moment, not a thing. Right?"
Kaylee: "Not a gorram thing."
Jayne:  "Looked like a thing to me."

Harken: "Is there any particular reason you don't wish to discuss your marriage?"
Zoe: "Don't see that it's any of your business, is all. We're very private people."
Wash: "The legs. Oh yeah, definitely have to say it was her legs.
You can put that down.  Her legs, and where her legs meet her
back. Actually, that whole area. That, and above it."

Mal: "He looked right into the face of it. Was made to stare . . .
The darkness. Kind of darkness you can't
even imagine. Blacker than the space it moves through."
