River’s behavior is becoming more worrisome for the crew of the Serenity and there are discussions as to what needs to be done. Meanwhile, a bounty hunter by the name of Jubal Early boards Serenity stealthily. He incapacitates most of the crewmembers as he searches for River. Eventually he uses Simon to try to find her, but they are unsuccessful. Then River, though unseen, starts talking to them, explaining that she is the ship and talks to Jubal about thing she couldn’t know. River also uses the intercom system to check on the crewmembers and prepare them to get rid of Jubal. Eventually Jubal figures out that River’s trick: she’s in his ship, but fortunately for Jubal, she is willing to go with Jubal because she knows it’s what’s best. But as Jubal goes to board his ship, Mal gets rid of him by simply pushing off into space.

Wash: "Little River just gets more colorful by the moment. What'll she do next?"
Zoe: "Either blow us all up or rub soup in our hair. It's a toss-up."
Wash: "I hope she does the soup thing. It's always a hoot, and we don't all die from it."
Mal: "But she does have an oddness to her.
And I ain't just talking about her proficiency with firearms.
Girl knows things. Things she shouldn't. Things she couldn't."
Jayne : "Wha-...are you-are you sayin' she's a witch?"
Wash: "Yes, Jayne. She's a witch. She has had congress with the beast."
Jayne: "She's in Congress?"
Wash: "How did your brain even learn human speech? I'm just so curious."
Wash: "Psychic, though? That sounds like something out of science fiction."
Zoe: "Dear, you live on a spaceship."
Early: "This is her room."
Early :"It's empty."
Simon: "I know."
Early : "So is it still her room when it's empty?
Does the room, the thing, have purpose?
Or do we -- what's the word?"
Simon: "I really can't help you."
Early : "The plan is to take your sister. Get the reward, which is substantial ...
'Imbue.' That's the word."
