Welcome What is a Browncoat What is Firefly

Zoë Warren

Mal: You ready?
Zoe: Always.

During the war, Zoe fought as an Independent under Sergeant Mal Reynolds. In Kaylee's words, she was "a real xiong ci sha shou"* in those days, as stoic as she was ruthless. She and Mal saw a lot of combat together, in some of the worst battles of the war. They were together at the battle of Serenity Valley, and those dangerous times forged a bond between them that remains unbroken.

Tracey: Thanks. Didn't know you were there.
Zoe: That's sort of the point. Stealth, you may have heard of it.
Tracey: I don't think they covered that in basic.
Zoe: Well, at least they covered dropping your weapon so you can eat beans and get yourself shot.
Tracey: Yeah, I got a badge in that. (seriously) Won't happen again.
Zoe: It does, I'm just gonna watch.

Ever since, Zoe has served at Mal's side, displaying the same quiet competence and unswerving loyalty that she showed in the war. When Mal bought Serenity, Zoe was the first person to whom he showed the ship. She's his partner of choice when a job's going down, and she hasn't let him down yet.

Alliance Commander: You fought with Captain Reynolds in the war?
Zoe: Fought with a lot of people in the war.
Alliance Commander: And your husband?
Zoe: Fight with him sometimes, too.

Zoe is married to Serenity's pilot, Wash. At first glance, they make an odd couple. She's strong and used to violence.  He's a happy-go-lucky guy who just likes to fly spaceships and have a good time. It's this difference, though, that's the core of their relationship. Like Mal, Zoe's life is defined by the war. It colors everything they do, right down to the way they eat an apple. For Zoe, Wash is everything that the war wasn't. He's upbeat, funny, playful, and, above all, suprisingly gentle.

Wash: Psychic, though? That sounds like something out of science fiction.
Zoe: You live on a spaceship, dear.

Of all of Serenity's crew, Zoe is the one that seems to have her house in order. She does her job well, weathers adversity with grim resolve, and enjoys the lighter moments of life.  She's an island of stability in the chaos of the rest of the crew's travails. Her only obvious problems stem from Wash's insecurities, which lead not only to his jealousy but also to his reluctance to have a baby with her.

*Xiong ci sha shou is Mandarin for "brutal assassin".

According to IMDB and other sources, Zoe and Wash's last name is Warren.  However, this is never mentioned in the series.

The script for "Heart of Gold" found at FireflyFans.net contains a scene in which Zoe mentions having been raised on a spaceship.  That part of the scene in question does not appear in the episode, however.

Gina Torres, the actress who plays Zoe, mentions on her official Web site that she was looking forward to a time when Zoe's stoic facade cracks and she finally has a breakdown.
